Anna saw an older man at a café and heard what he told a waitress, which prompted her to hug him and give him some encouraging words. She received keys the next day and was stunned by what the older man had to say.
“My friend died a few days ago. That’s why I’m not here with him today. Now, I’m all alone in the world,”Anna overheard the older man speak. He was sitting at the table next to her and he was talking to the waitress of the local café she often visited in her hometown in Ohio.
Anna felt her mouth open and thought back to the time she saw that man and his friend in the coffee shop. Even though they didn’t know each other, she felt sorry for them. It was a reminder to her that life is so short and she had to seize every opportunity.

The waitress extended her condolences to the man and returned to work quickly. Anna turned her back to the man, saw him lose his breath and couldn’t bear any more. She slammed her chair against the concrete floor, then pulled it back and walked directly to the man’s place.
“Mr. Lockton, what is this? What about our coffee?”Anna called when she got out from her car.
“Sir, I don’t know you, and you don’t know me, but I just heard what you told the waitress. And I had noticed you with your friend at this spot several times before, so I wanted to offer my condolences for your loss too,”Anna said this, almost twitching at the sight of the strange man. Then, suddenly, she hugged him.
Although she didn’t know why it had happened, she was able to feel the urge and the man reached out to hug her. “Thank you, young lady. That means a lot, especially to this old man who has lost everyone else in his life. Would you like to have coffee with me?”He asked, his expression revealing how much the gesture meant to him.

“Of course,”She said, and she sat down next to him.
Adam Lockton introduced himself to the man, who had been living in the area since retirement. Even though it had been just a day since the funeral, there was no one left to support him and he was feeling very alone.
“You know what? I’m your new friend. I’m Anna Miller, and we can meet here whenever you want. In fact, you can come to my house too. My husband and kids don’t have grandparents anymore, and I bet they would love you,”Anna smiled with a happy, tearful smile. Anna reached for her purse, pulled out a piece of paper and a pen. “I’ll write my phone number down.”
Mr. Lockton smiled and accepted the piece. “I’ll make sure to do that, young lady. I mean, Anna,”He said it, his crooked smile revealing a gratefulness and puzzlement at the younger woman’s offer of friendship. She was the only person who would give it as freely as she did. He was very proud of it.

Anna went to the coffeeshop for an afternoon cup with Mr. Lockton. The waitress approached her.
“Mr. Lockton told me to give you these keys and this address. He said to go there as soon as you can,”She revealed her confusion with a confused grin
Anna, who was also confused by the keys, got up and drove to the address. It was a puzzle to her to see Mr. Lockton on a swing on the porch of a large, beautiful house.
“Mr. Lockton, what is this? What about our coffee?”Anna called when she got out her car and climbed the steps to be next to the elder man.

“This was my friend’s new home, and he didn’t get to enjoy it at all. Like me, he didn’t have anyone left, so it’s mine now,”Mr. Lockton was open, but his lips turned in chagrin. “I misspoke. It’s now yours. Those are the keys in your hand.”
Anna was stunned and refused to comply, explaining that her husband and she had good incomes. They were already the owners of their home, so they didn’t need to buy a new one. But Mr. Lockton shrugged.
“I don’t need it either, but I know that someone as kind and as wonderful as you will know exactly what to do with it. Please, accept this as my thank you for what you did yesterday.”
“But I didn’t do anything.”
“Yes, you did.”
