Police announced Thursday that a man was arrested following the alleged carjacking of an 81-year old woman who was serving homeless people in Redlands.
The incident took place Monday afternoon at around 3:30 PM in the parking lot for a Stater Bros shop at 11 E. Colton Ave.
The carjacker’s victim told police that she was in the parking lot to give meals to the homeless.
While she was handing out meals from the open trunk, the suspect allegedly forcefully took the keys from her and got into the driver’s seat of her vehicle, police said.
Police release videoThe victim was unable to open the car’s door after the suspect got in.
The suspect then allegedly drove off while the victim was still holding onto the driver’s door and she was knocked to the ground.
She was not hurt.
Police stated that the man was seen entering the westbound 10 Freeway and the rear hatch of his stolen vehicle was still open.
Los Angeles Police Department officers discovered the vehicle, a 2015 Kia Sportage in a garage along East 11th Street in downtown L.A. on Wednesday evening.
According to police, the driver was identified by Roberto Carlos Sanchez Jr. aged 24. He was taken into custody on suspicion that he was in possession of a stolen car.
Redlands police went to Los Angeles to conduct an investigation. They confirmed that Sanchez had been involved in a carjacking on Redlands’ parking lot.
He was then taken to West Valley Detention Center San Bernardino, where he is currently being held under suspicion of elder abuse. His bail was set at $250,000.
