A train derailed in Lincoln Heights, close to the same track where NBC4 reported previously thousands of empty boxes left by cargo thieves.
Around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, the train was visible, stopping and moving off the tracks. The cause of the train’s derailment is not yet known.
Union Pacific, which was the owner of derailment train, issued a statement just after it derailed.
“This afternoon approximately 17 cars on a Union Pacific train derailed just outside of our LATC yard, the same area where the vandalism has been occurring,”Union Pacific. “The train crew was not hurt. The cause is under investigation.”
It was not possible to estimate the time required for cleanup.
The accident occurred in an area known for being the victim of thefts of cargo. The scene was captured on video and showed empty boxes left by companies like UPS and Amazon.
Union Pacific asked the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution of anyone arrested in connection with the crimes.
