However, times have changed and superfast 5G is the main focus.

The firm announced that 3G will be completely cut off by the end 2024.

It claims this will free up resources so it can focus on improving 4G and continue rolling out 5G, as part of a £2billion commitment.

However, some customers will be without internet access for a while.

If you want to stay connected to the network, those who have an older 3G device must upgrade.

According to Three 3G usage has declined steadily, so 5G usage has exceeded it.

It is a result of recent concerns about cars that rely on 3G for safety features.

Vodafone and EE, among others, have already made commitments to reduce 3G usage by 2023.

It is well ahead of the industry-wide target of 2033, though this also includes 2G networks.

2G, despite being older, will take longer as it offers wider coverage.

David Hennessy (Three’s Chief Technology Officer) stated: “As we continue to roll out our ultrafast connectivity, by not only upgrading our existing 4G sites but building new 5G sites, we’ll be in a position to switch off our use of 3G across our network by the end of 2024.”

Three is pledging to support any 3G customers who are still using their phone, as the date for switching off 3G nears.
