The Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven to be a huge success over the last decade.
Starting with Robert Downey Jr’s Ironman, it’s spawned hit after hit at the box office. Avengers: Endgame made $2.7bn, according to Indie Wire, as it tied up loose ends from many of the other movies. Of course, that sort of revenue meant the characters that survived wouldn’t stay retired for long, and producers would be hunting fresh, new heroes for the world to fawn over.
A handful of films and series are expected soon, with Spider-Man next up before the festive season ends. As we enter 2022, there are even more queued up, ready to have you queuing outside your local movie theater. Which are the most eagerly anticipated? We think these three will be right up there.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor is a relative newcomer in terms of Marvel characters on screen; Spider-Man, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk all came first, but Chris Hemsworth has turned the Norse God into something of a fan’s favorite. He’s been helped by a strong depiction in digital media – Thor is well known outside of the Marvel Universe, which is a big help. He has appeared in several console games, such as Thor: God of Thunder in 2011. That was a hack ’n’ slash game, but that isn’t the only genre you can find him in; Gala Bingo features an online slot bearing his imagery, Power of Thor Megaways. Of course, the Hemsworth inspired Marvel character is also prevalent, featuring in Marvel’s Avengers on PlayStation 5 and equivalent. As for Thor: Love and Thunder, arguably the most eagerly anticipated of the Marvel films, we get to see female Thor (Natalie Portman), as well as Hemsworth’s now beloved interpretation.
Doctor Strange 2: In the Multiverse of Madness
With Spider-Man director Sam Raimi in the hot seat, and Benedict Cumberbatch returning as the Sorcerer Supreme, there’s no surprise Doctor Strange 2 is getting fans excited. It is meant to be a direct follow up to the 2016 original, and will be film number 28 of the MCU. Filming wrapped up in April 2021, and it’s expected to hit the cinemas in May 2022. As his name suggests, Doctor Strange is an odd character in the Marvel Universe, as he isn’t often seen in spin-off movies or digital media. However, a video game is expected soon from Insomniac Games, which might help further push the character with audiences.
The Incredible Hulk is one of the most beloved Marvel characters out there, having been a part of pop culture for far longer than many of the Avengers’ stars. Hulk first appeared on our TV screens in the seventies, with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno making the green monster a star. He’s appeared in a slew of video games as well, from the 1994 Mega Drive game of the same name to the PlayStation 4 game, again sharing the same title. 2022 will see a unique twist to the character, with the arrival of She-Hulk, Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters. Unlike the other two picks, this will be a series rather than a film, but it is likely to be so popular we’ll see Tatiana Maslany, cast as She-Hulk, on the big screens soon.
