SoCal remembers Memorial Day tributes in the Southland

Memorial Day is upon us and there are many tributes to fallen heroes scheduled across the Southland.

We’ve listed some of the events taking place Monday with information on where and when to attend:

Long Beach

Rosie the Riveter Park 3599 Clark Ave. in Long Beach will read the names all the military personnel who have been killed in action since September 11, 2001.

The event will begin at 5:30 AM with veterans, active duty military personnel and family members all in attendance.

“It means a lot to them … every day is Memorial Day to them,” Laura Herzog is the founder of Honoring Our Fallen.

“Our freedom isn’t free and our freedom has faces,”Herzog talked about the importance to teach children how to honor those who served.

“It’s our job to teach our children … and now that we can publicly gather it’s a great opportunity for us to bring out our children,” Herzog said.

Glendale

A display of patriotism will see one thousand flags fly from 8-foot poles at Forest Lawn Glendale, 1712 S. Glendale Ave.

According to Glendale Field of Honor the display honoring veterans, current military personnel as well community leaders and other heroes will take place from Monday, May 23, through Monday, May 30, Website.

“The Field of Honor Memorial provides a stirring display of red, white and blue that is difficult to describe, but not to be forgotten,”According to the website.

Newport Beach

Castaways Park located at 700 Dover Drive is transformed each year by 1,776 Flags. “Field of Honor”to pay tribute to the men and women who have served this country.

According to the organisers, the display will run from Armed Forces Day (May 20, 2012) through May 31, 2012. Exchange Club Newport Harbor.

On Memorial Day (May 30, 2012), a special dedication will be held.

Boyle Heights

Memorial Day at Los Cinco Puntos has been an annual event that honors Mexican Americans who gave their lives for freedom and justice over the past 75 years. This is where East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue intersects Indiana Street, Lorena Boulevard, and Indiana Street.

Each year, volunteers guard the memorial in the park every day for 24 hours.
