Following a roof collapse at Temple City’s strip mall, six people were safely rescued.
The owner of Beauty De Color Salon is Theresa Nguyen still feels shaken after five others were rescued from the roof.
“The noise was really loud,”She spoke. “We was stand up, walking inside. Finding someplace to hide. Luckily everyone was safe. Yeah.”
LA County fire officials claim that a 50-foot section of a dry cleaners near her home fell around 4 p.m. for unknown reasons, trapping Nguyen and four others inside her salon.
“It felt like an earthquake,”Justin Han was there to get a haircut. “Started hearing squeaky noises. Suddenly the roof collapsed. Everybody started running to the back.”
Fire crews cleared the way because both affected businesses did not have back doors.
“We have our heavy wrecker here,”According to Inspector Ruben Muz, a spokesperson for the LA County Fire Department. “We were able to bring that up. And use that to get the debris out. And get the patients, the people out very quickly.”
After someone said that she could not be allowed back in her home for months, a salon owner requested that firefighters retrieve a fish aquarium.
Two parked cars were hit by falling debris.
Survivors are grateful that they were able to all walk away.
“We just open three months,” Nguyen said. “Didn’t expect this to happen!”
A city inspector confirmed that the L-shaped leg of the structure has been marked red, meaning that it is not safe for anyone to return.
On Thursday, structural engineers will help to determine the cause of the collapse and how repairs can be made.
