Jacob lost his wife during childbirth and was left to care for his daughter. Although he was careful with his daughter, he couldn’t manage his work load and child-rearing tasks alone. One morning, he woke to see a pin in her crib, which could have hurt her. Then someone knocked unexpectedly on his door.
“Jacob, your job is on the line. We have been patient with everything you have gone through, but your performance at work has been less than ok. We are officially placing you on probation,”Jacob was told by Mr. Clemens his boss. He could tell that the older man was sad about it, and Jacob didn’t have any excuses.
He missed work often, forgot important meetings and was slow on many projects. It was a miracle that they didn’t fire him. “Mr. Clemens, I assure you. I’ll work something out. I just have to figure out what to do about Gigi,”He replied that he was thankful for his job.

Jacob hired a nanny in order to be able to go to work. But he couldn’t afford the cost forever and Gigi was a fussy baby. She cried every night and couldn’t sleep at night. It was as though she was aware of something missing.
“Oh no! I left the door unlocked! What is wrong with me?”Jacob lamented, rubbing frustration in his hair and then sitting down on a couch.
He wished Rita was still with him for the thousandth occasion. He was devastated when he saw Rita die at the birthing table. He had made a promise to Gigi that he would care for her like gold. Now he was failing. He could not lose his job, but he didn’t know how to calm her or settle their lives.
The one thing that calmed Gigi down was riding in the car once in a while, so one day, he took her out right before bedtime. Luckily, she fell asleep, and they returned home. He got her out of the car seat and gently laid her down on the living room crib. He let out a deep sigh and sat down on a couch, resting his head on the cushions. He didn’t notice when he fell asleep.

He woke up the next morning surprised to find that he was still sitting on the couch. He turned around to see that Gigi was awake, making loud noises. He was relieved to see that she wasn’t crying. It was time for breakfast.
Something caught his attention as he pulled her from the crib. He noticed a shiny pin in her crib. This was rather strange. Jacob made sure that Jacob didn’t leave any pointy items around his daughter. Jacob even gave up buttoned shirts to make sure she didn’t accidentally pull them and place them in her mouth. It was just so strange.
“I’m going to have a talk with Sabrina about this,”He resolved to refer to his nanny.
The door opened and there was a knock at the door. Jacob put the baby in her crib and answered it. “Mrs. Neal, good morning,”He smiled at his neighbor next door, and he said it.
“Hello, Jacob. I need to tell you something,”The older woman started.
“Oh, no. Did the baby cry last night? I didn’t wake up once, but it’s entirely possible. I know it’s probably been hard on you all these months, Mrs. Neal,”Jacob apologized but was stopped by the older woman.

“Jacob, Jacob. Listen. I’m not upset. Not anymore, at least,” Mrs. Neal retorted. “Last night, I heard Gigi crying terribly. It was 2 a.m. and she wouldn’t seem to stop. I came here and knocked on your door several times. I was actually pretty angry. You didn’t answer. But your door was unlocked, so I came in.”
“Oh no! I left the door unlocked! What is wrong with me?”Jacob lamented, rubbing the hair in frustration and settling down on the couch. Mrs. Neal entered the room and shut the door.
“It’s ok. It was only me, and I tried to close it well when I left. But anyway, I picked up Gigi last night and rocked her to sleep as best I could. She settled after about an hour, and all my anger melted away. I just wanted to let you know,”The older woman explained that she was sat opposite him on the sofa.

“Thank you, Mrs. Neal. She could’ve cried all night. I don’t understand how I didn’t hear her,”He added, touching his face while looking at his daughter with a hurt expression. “I’m a terrible father.”
“You’re not. You just need help, and I came here to offer it after what I witnessed yesterday. I’ve noticed that you sometimes have a nanny, but I know it’s hard to pay for one these days. Why don’t I watch Gigi while you go to work? I can do it every day for free,”She offered her surprise, surprising Jacob completely.
He shook his head. “I couldn’t burden you like that.”
“It’s no burden. Sometimes, son, you have to accept help, even if you don’t want to admit you need it.”

“I know… it’s just… wait a minute… is this yours?”Jacob rose and grabbed the safety clip he’d left on top of a nearby cabinet. Mrs. Neal was impressed and he showed it to him.
“Oh dear. I left that here. I’m sorry,”The older woman climbed up and grabbed the bag. “I had lost a button yesterday and used it to keep my shirt in place.”
“Thank God. I thought I was going crazy because it was in Gigi’s crib,”Jacob explained and the two of them sat down again on the couch. “I think I’m going to take you up on that offer. I don’t really trust my nanny, and I could use all the help I can get. Are you sure it’s not too much?”
“I’m completely sure. All my kids are grown-ups with their own babies, but they don’t visit Florida that much. So Gigi can be my grandbaby in their stead,”Mrs. Neal smiled broadly and laughed.
“Thank you. Thank you so much,”Jacob almost wept at her kindness.

Gigi spent almost every day with Mrs. Neal, and Jacob was able to focus on work without any distractions. He was released from probation and promoted.
Little Miss Neal was the real grandmother to her, and she loved it. She realized that her best decision was to help her neighbor rather than yelling at him.
