Rich Teen Mocks Poor Lifeguard at Public Pool, Next Day Lifeguard Saves Half His Family – Story of the Day

A lifeguard at the pool is mocked by a wealthy boy on vacation, but the next morning he proves that he is worthy.

Jonathan Tremaine sat on his recliner, looking at a pair of beautiful girls in bikinis by the edge the pool. They looked away as he gave them his most charming smile, the one that showed his dimples.

They were leaning forward and whispering. Did they laugh at him? Jonathan realized that they had not even seen him. They were all focused on the young man sitting in the lifeguard’s seat.

It was unbelievable! Jonathan knew he was very attractive, and he exercised religiously three days a week at his private fitness center. Everyone who looked at his gear could see that he was a millionaire.

What was wrong? They were laughing and twirling their hair, trying to get the attention of a boy so insignificant and poor that it took him a whole summer to watch others have fun.

Jonathan turned his attention to his family as he sat on the nearby stretchers. His father was lying down and trying to relax while his mother chattered to Lisa, his baby sister.

Lisa was twelve when she was shy and gawky. Jonathan was not impressed by her beauty, but she would have plenty of boyfriends if it weren’t for Jonathan’s wealth.

Jonathan on the other side believed he would be popular regardless of circumstances. He was tall and slim and a top swimmer on the team. This was when he got an idea.

People who do their jobs well deserve respect.

He would show the girls if he was impressed by swimmers. He stood up quickly and ran towards the edge of the pool. Then he leapt into space and dived in smooth, right into the middle a group of romping children.

Jonathan parted his hands with the water, and he plunged into the depths. He then emerged from the edge. He reached out to his wet hair, and he looked at the girls. Yes! They looked his way…

He heard a loud voice calling out to him: “Please don’t dive bomb into the pool like that! There are children present that might have been hurt!”

Jonathan swam up to the edge and looked up. Jonathan stared at the lifeguard with stern eyes. “You dived in right next to some small kids. You could have hurt them,”He said it to Jonathan.

Jonathan saw the girls staring at him with open-mouthed admiration. He felt a waverage and embarrassment. “Who do you think you are?”He was arrogant.

He stood straight up and marched towards the lifeguard. Then he regretted it. The young man was probably twenty-one years younger than Jonathan, and was also taller.

Jonathan was forced to look at him and he immediately regretted it. “What’s your name?” he demanded. “I’m an important person in this town. My father is friends with the Mayor, and he pays your salary!”

The young man had quiet, calm eyes. “I’m David Canden,”He responded. “Whoever you are, the safety of the people in this pool comes first. I think as someone who is friends with the Mayor safety would be a priority to you too.”

“You loser!” Jonathan screamed. “Who do you think you are? You sit there watching your betters and think you can order me around?”

Jonathan’s father got up and walked to the other side. “What’s going on?”He asked.

“This man.”Jonathan waved a disdainful arm at David. “He was mouthing off at me for diving into the pool. AT ME!”

“Young man,”Jonathan’s father said it coldly. “I’ll have you know that my son is a champion swimmer! He’s a state champion gold medalist. You bully my son again and I’ll have your job!”

“Yes!”Jonathan angrily shouted. “And you think you’re so good? I can swim circles around you! I can cross this pool before you can get up from your chair. We don’t need you!”

David listened calmly to their ranting. “Please act sensible,”He said it all. “So we can all have a safe summer.”He turned his back to the son and father fuming and walked back toward his chair.

Jonathan and his family were back at the pool the following day. Jonathan watched the lifeguard, who was completely ignored by him and the cute girls.

His sister Lisa got up. “Mom, come for a swim with me!”She said.

Jonathan’s mother sighed. “Honey, I don’t feel like it…”She said. “Ask daddy.”

“You know daddy doesn’t swim!” Lisa pouted. “Please mom, I hate going in alone.”

“Jonathan?”His mom asked.Source: Unsplash”Want to go in with Lisa?”

Jonathan stretched himself more comfortably and sneered. “As if! She’s a brat! She’s old enough to go into the pool on her own.”

Jonathan’s mom sighed, then shook her heads and got up. “Come on, Lisa!”She replied kindly. “I know that as soon as you make some friends you’ll be just fine!”

Jonathan watched his sister and mother walk to the edge and get in the water without any splashes. He lost interest quickly and looked at the girls as he heard a scream.

Lisa was struggling in water! Jonathan was aware that she was a skilled swimmer and couldn’t understand Lisa’s panic. Her head was going under as she hit her arms on the surface of the water.

His mom was right next to Lisa and reached out for her immediately. However, in panic, his sister wrapped her arms around his mother’s neck, and began clawing at her shoulders. His mom was too!

“Jonathan!”His father screamed. “Help them!”Jonathan was frozen in terror. He could not think, and he couldn’t act.

He panicked as if the water was flooding his own nose, filling his throat. Then, a thin figure moved past and dived into the water.

David pulled Lisa out of the water within seconds and began to pull her towards the edge. He gave her to Jonathan’s dad and then dived in for his mom.

He carried her out and brought her up. He quickly laid her out, and then began mouth-to–mouth resuscitation. Jonathan noticed that Jonathan’s mother started to sputter and cough and was breathing very raggedly.

“Lisa,”She cried out in exasperation. “Where is Lisa?”

“Lisa is alright,”David gently pointed out to the spot where the twelve-year old was wrapped in a towel, shivering. “You are both safe.”

“Thank you,”Jonathan sobbed Jonathan’s mother. “I don’t know what happened! She’s such a good swimmer, then she clutched at me and we both went under!”

“My leg hurt!” Lisa sobbed. “I couldn’t move my leg, I couldn’t swim!”

David nodded. “That’s a cramp,”He explained. “The next time that happens, take deep breaths. Don’t panic, OK? Float on your back and call for help.”

“Ok,”Lisa said this, gazing admiringly at David. Jonathan’s father stepped forward and shook David’s wet hands.

“Son,”He stated. “You saved my wife and my daughter and I owe you two lives. Let me reward you…”Jonathan’s father took out his money clip, and began to peel off $100 bills.

David stood up and shook his fist. “No thank you, sir,”He stated. “I was just doing my job.”

“Thank you,”Jonathan’s dad spoke with tears in their eyes. “Thank you again and again. A thousand times thank you…”

Jonathan became sick of hearing about David the next day and was tired of listening to his father and mother praise him. Lisa mooned over Jonathan, who had a crush on the lifeguard.

“PLEASE!”He snorted. “Can we stop talking about a guy who earns $13 an hour as if he was a bloody hero?”

Jonathan’s dad wasn’t happy. “There was a time I would have been happy to earn $13 an hour, Jonathan,”He snapped. “Being poor is no disgrace. In fact, I’ll have you remember that YOU’VE never earned a cent in your life on your own merit. What you have and enjoy I worked for, and I worked hard. People who do their jobs well deserve your respect — be it a cleaner, a brain surgeon, or a lifeguard!”

Jonathan’s father spoke to the Mayor that afternoon and learned that David had worked summers to help pay for his college education. He created a college fund for David, and nominated him to receive a medal for his service as a lifeguard.
