Here’s everything you need to know concerning Darwin Nunez, Liverpool near deal

Liverpool has confirmed that Darwin Nunez, who is a potential club record holder, will be wearing shirt number 27.

The Reds have secured the signing of the Benfica striker for a fee believed to be in the region of £64m, whilst a number of add-ons could take the total value of the deal to an eye-watering £85m – surpassing the huge fee that the Merseyside outfit paid for the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Premier League rivals Southampton back in January 2018.

Nunez, a Uruguayan international has penned a long-term contract at Anfield believed to be six years long and he becomes Jurgen Klopp’s first acquisition of the summer window.

Fans will be eager to see the name and number on their new kits. Liverpool has already confirmed his squad number.

Nunez will be wearing the number 27 on Merseyside. He will take the number 27 from Divock Origi (a Merseyside legend who left the shirt unworn after he transferred to Anfield). He is expected to sign with AC Milan.

Prior to that, the shirt was unoccupied. Philipp Degen, Swiss defender, was last to wear it for a few seasons in 2008 and 2010. Nunez will undoubtedly be looking to win the shirt, as he has his goal-scoring reputation.

It is slightly different to his spell with Benfica though having previously donned the number nine for the Portuguese giants but of course that shirt is already occupied by Nunez’s new attacking colleague Roberto Firmino.

After being confirmed as a Liverpool player at the age of 22, he began to set his sights on winning silverware as a Red. As quoted by the club’s official website, he said: “When I arrived at the training ground, I was really surprised to see the set-up and the structure and all the trophies here.

“You can then imagine yourself winning more trophies and then later on when you come here again and see the trophies on display, you can say, ‘Look, I was a part of that, I was there at that time, winning trophies.’

“That’s one of the reasons why I came here to Liverpool – to win trophies and titles. I want to win a lot of trophies at Liverpool.”

Nunez being signed means that Anfield will see a significant departure. Sadio mane is still linked to a move to German giants Bayern Munich.
