LAPD Officer Dies In Training Accident at Police Academy – Los Angeles

Los Angeles police officer, who suffered a severe spinal cord injury at Elysian Park Academy during training exercises, died Sunday.

According to Chief Michel Moore, LAPD, the accident occurred on Thursday. Houston Tipping was an officer in the Devonshire Division. His age was not immediately known.

The chief stated that Tipping was a bike instructor and engaged in a situation where he had to grapple with another officer. Tipping was injured in the spinal cord when he fell to the ground during the exercise. Up until Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived, CPR was initiated by other officers.

Moore called Tipping “a bright and uplifting young man with a full life in front of him.”

He made the following Twitter statement: “Grief, sorrow and sadness,” adding, “May God Welcome him home & comfort his family, friends & partners. Our work continues in a profession that at times calls for a cost that is so very high. Blessed are the Peacemakers.”

According to the LAPD Tipping’s parents, Richard and Shirley Tipping are still living. He is also survived by his stepfather Bob and his siblings Kat and Tyler. Brittany was Tipping’s girlfriend.

“As we grieve this terrible loss, our thoughts are with the family of Officer Tipping, his Devonshire area family, and the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department during this difficult time,” Moore said. Officer Tipping, true to his unending dedication, is an organ donor. His selflessness will save many lives over the next few days.

Moore said that the department was investigating the accident and identifying any possible steps to prevent another tragedy.

The LAPD Protective League also released a statement on Tipping’s death, saying, “Today, our city lost one of its young heroes, LAPD Officer Houston Tipping. Tipping, a five-year veteran of the LAPD Protective League, was a police officer who patrolled Devonshire’s neighborhoods and served as a bicycle instructor. His friends and family remember him for his love of being a police officer.
