LA Installs Historic Filipinotown Gateway Arch – Los Angeles

Los Angeles will soon have a new landmark.

The Historic Filipinotown Eastern Gateway (also called Talang Gabay or Our Guiding Star) will be installed at an entrance to the neighborhood, northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

It measures 82 feet in length and 30 feet high. The structure is located over Beverly Boulevard, which is the eastern entrance to the neighborhood. The project is estimated to cost $587,000.

According to Mitch O’Farrell’s Office, the entire structure will be installed Friday. However, some painting and final aesthetic touches can be done into Saturday.

Before dawn, the arch structure was laid on a flatbed.

Celestino and Eliseo Geronimo Jr, Filipino American artists, designed this gateway. They used Filipino cultural symbols such as the parol (a Filipino ornamental lantern); the Gumamela flower, also known by hibiscus, to pay tribute to frontline workers; or the Sarimanok which is a legendary bird that originated on the Philippine island Mindanao.

Silva also created the Philippine mural in Unidad Park, near the Eastern Gateway.

Los Angeles is home to over half a million Filipinos. According to O’Farrell, the project to build the gateway has been in development for almost 20 years. The project was first initiated by Mayor Eric Garcetti, who represented the 11th District. O’Farrell is now responsible for it.

O’Farrell originally committed $152,000 to the Eastern Gateway Project in 2018. However, O’Farrell was able to raise additional funds through cost savings for another project and provided $452,000 for this landmark.

In collaboration with the Board of Public Works this project forms part of a larger program to upgrade the First Street Bridge using seismic retrofitting, lane enhancements, and other improvements.
