Joose Jeskanen will bring a little more to the backyard Olympics for his family! As the 7 Little JohnstonsPopCulture.com sneak preview of Tuesday’s episode shows family preparing for their Johnston Backyard Games. A 17-year-old Finnish student exchange student supports American family traditions with a passionate rendition of the national song, performed on his own trumpet.
“How long did it take you to learn the national anthem?”Jeskanen is contacted by a producer and answers. “I got the sheet music of [the] national anthem about four days ago, but it was [a] pretty easy song for me because I have played nine years trumpet. So it was not hard.”Jeskanen is also a little guy and explains that his pocket trumpet is called a “pocket trumpet”. “a little bit smaller”He could use the trumpets in a different way than others, but it didn’t require any special modifications to his arms.
“It would be like a cello and a violin,”Jonah Johnston clarifies, as Jeskanen explains that the sound is the same as a full-sized trombone. As Jeskanen plays “The Star-Spangled Banner,”The entire Johnston family, in patriotic attire complete with red, green, and blue face paint, lines up. Trent Johnston jokes about how he feels after the stirring rendition that the entire neighborhood is on their back porch, also swearing allegiance the U.S.
Jeskanen is also honored as the Johnston Backyard Games kickoff family. He is asked by his host family for help lighting the torch through a family bonfire. “I feel like it’s starting to really feel official,”Amber Johnston tells cameras. Trent mentions that Jeskanen will light the beacon. “We let the athlete from the farthest distance light the torch.”
Jeskanen was shocked at the differences in culture between Finland and the U.S. when he first moved in with the Johnstons for three month. “I’m so excited about this. Everything here is new for me,”In a previous episode, he stated the same thing on the return trip from the airport. He laughed when he was asked about his plans to join the Johnstons for all their antics. “Maybe Johnston family is crazy … But it’s OK. I like to be, like, also crazy.” 7 Little JohnstonsAirs Tuesdays at 9 PM ET on TLC ET on TLC
