HBO Documentary ‘Katrina Babies’ Released

What is it? Katrina Babies about?

Edward Buckles, Jr., is the director. Katrina Babies. This book gives an intimate glimpse into the aftermath and effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans’ youth. This generation must deal with the devastating effects of a childhood that was forever altered by tragedy.

Buckles was 12 years old when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. He decided to create a documentary about his childhood peers who survived. He wanted to capture New Orleans’ spirit. Katrina BabiesHe worked on it for years.

“After my family and I experienced Hurricane Katrina in 2005, we were left to pick up the pieces of a situation that seemed totally out of our control. I was 12 years old, and like with many catastrophes, children were an afterthought,” Buckles said. “It baffled me that after we experienced one of the deadliest natural disasters in the U.S. no one asked us how we were doing or feeling. No one asked us right after the storm and no one is asking now, so I picked up a camera and decided to do it myself.”

Invisible Pictures and IME Studios co-produced the film along with Creative Control (and House of the Young Entertainment). Katrina Babies. Buckles announced the project for the first time on the 16th anniversary the natural catastrophe. He co-produced the film along with Audrey Rosenberg from Invisible Pictures, and Rebecca Teitel from TIME Studio.

Per HBO, it’s also executive produced by Coodie & Chike of Creative Control, Ian Orefice, Mike Beck, and Alexa Conway of TIME Studios, and Jess Jacob of Invisible Pictures. Buckles was awarded twice for his documentary at the 2022 Tribeca Awards. He received an award for Best New Documentary Director and the festival’s first-ever Human Nature award.

HBO announces premiere date

HBO has set a premiere date Katrina Babies. Press release via Futon CriticThe documentary will air on Wednesday, August 24, 2010. It will air on HBO, and it will also be streamable on HBO Max.

Buckles hopes this will give a voice to his city that’s been long-forgotten after the deadly storm. There will be footage that includes confessionals, home movies and archived footage of Katrina, as well interviews with young Katrina survivors. It also highlights the traumas that black youth face in America, particularly when it comes down to systemic racism.
