The American Red Cross warned Tuesday of a dangerously low blood supply in the United States. They hoped to encourage donations by automatically entering donors into a raffle that would give away Super Bowl tickets and other prizes.

Red Cross faces staff shortages while it seeks to fulfill the “critical” need for blood. The Red Cross will be holding a job fair in Arcadia Wednesday to fill vacant positions on its mobile Phlebotomist team, which will help with blood drives in the region.

According to the organization, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a 10% drop in blood donation and a staffing shortage. According to the organization, the pandemic caused a 62% decrease in blood drives at colleges and schools.

“Our inventory is at crisis levels,” said Raahima Shoaib Yazdani, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross’ Los Angeles Region. “Doctors are currently being forced to make decisions about which patients will receive blood transfusions and which ones must wait.

Red Cross stated that blood and platelet donations are critical to prevent delays in medical treatment. They urged all blood types, but particularly type O, to make an appointment to donate.

According to the organization’s statement, it has been unable to obtain critical blood types for more than one day in recent weeks. Therefore, blood product distributions have been limited to hospitals.

The organization stated that sometimes, up to one-quarter of hospital blood demands are not being met.

Appointments can be made via the Red Cross Blood Donor Application, RedCrossBlood.org and by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1 800-733-2767).
