Dave Chappelle attacked the stage during a Hollywood Bowl performance

Comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked while performing at the Hollywood Bowl Tuesday night.

Chappelle performed on the stage during the Netflix Is A Joke comedy fest, which ran through Sunday, May 8.

According to Officer Lomeli of Los Angeles Police Department, the suspect was identified as 23-year old Isaiah Lee. He jumped onto the stage and attacked Chappelle as he was leaving.

Lomeli stated that Lee had a replica gun and knife in his possession at the time the attack took place.

Social media video showed Chappelle seeming to clean up the dirt as he addressed the crowd.

The comedian The man was repeatedly asked for security and joked that he was trans.

“Thank you sir. It was a … it was a trans man,”Chappelle addressed the crowd.

Another video was captured outside the Hollywood Bowl and showed a crowd surrounding the suspected attacker as he was being transferred onto a wheelchair and loaded into an ambulance.

Lee was taken to the local hospital for medical treatment. There, he was charged with assault with a deadly instrument, Lomeli reported.

He was being held on $30,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Inmate Information Center.

It’s unclear the exact reason the person stormed the stage, but the controversial comedian has drawn the ire of members of the LGBTQ+ community for jokes he has made at the expense of transgender people in recent comedy specials produced by Netflix.

Despite the criticisms, the entertainment company stood by Chappelle. This led to internal criticism from some employees of the streaming giant which culminated with a walkout by employees this October.

KTLA has reached out to Netflix and the Hollywood Bowl for comment about Tuesday night’s incident but has yet to hear back.

Chris Rock, comedian, was also present at this event. He jokedly asked if Will Smith was the culprit, the Associated Press reported.

The on-stage incident comes on the heels of Smith’s shocking assault of Rock during the live broadcast of the Oscars. Smith approached the stage and slapped Rock across the face after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett’s hair.

Smith was banned from Academy Awards for a decade for his slap across the globe. Rock was mostly silent about the incident.
