Boris Johnson says there’s ‘no need’ to cancel Christmas plans

Coronavirus rates are rising in half of the UK’s towns and cities as the number of known Omicron cases in England alone nearly quadruples.

Analysis of local areas across the country has shown infections are rising in the majority.

While the new, concerning variant Omicron still accounts for a very small minority of cases, its numbers are rising rapidly.

A further 75 cases were returned today, bringing the total to 104, with a further 16 cases being identified in Scotland – bringing the total there to 29.

For coronavirus cases as a whole, 50,584 infections were recorded in the UK today.

That compares to 14,879 this day last year – 16 days before a national lockdown was announced.

While cases are much higher now, with deaths almost three times lower than in 2020, Boris Johnson has insisted Christmas will not be cancelled again.

The Prime Minister has said the holiday should go ahead “as normally as possible” despite widespread concern about the Omicron variant.

Speaking during a visit to Oswestry in North Shrops, the Prime Minister added to the confusion by saying people did not need to cancel parties or nativities.

Glossing over contradictory advice from his own ministers in recent days, he said: “There’s been quite a lot of to-ing and fro-ing, people concerned they need to cancel Christmas parties.

“That’s not right, we’re not saying that… Christmas should go ahead as normally as possible.”

In the UK this week, of the 377 local areas in the UK, 201 (53%) have seen a week-on-week rise in rates and 176 (47%) have seen a fall.

Torridge in Devon continues to have the highest rate in the UK, with 723 new cases in the seven days to November 29 – the equivalent of 1,052.1 per 100,000 people.

This is down slightly from 1,059.4 in the seven days to November 22.

Gwynedd in Wales has the second highest rate, down slightly from 879.6 to 871.6, with 1,091 new cases.

North Devon has the third highest rate, down from 866.9 to 850.6, with 835 new cases.

Newry, Mourne & Down has the highest rate in Northern Ireland (713.9, up from 577.4) and Falkirk has the highest rate in Scotland (600.4, up from 563.7).

The five UK areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

Ashford (up from 509.1 to 796.8)

Brentwood (433.7 to 651.2)

Lewes (579.6 to 771.8)

Hart (496.9 to 686.4)

Gedling (443.2 to 629.2)

Here is the list in full.
