Grant couldn’t get his kids to come to his home for the holidays so he had an idea. He sent them shock letters. They showed up at his home and were surprised to see him for a specific reason.
“I’m sorry, Dad. We can’t fly home to California. Bob can’t take any time off, and we’re saving for the summer vacation. The kids want to go to Disneyland,”Kate, Grant’s daughter, told him that Kate was coming home for the holidays. He thought she might be open to the idea, and so did his other three children. John and Daniel, two of his brothers, had already offered him excuses.
Grant was fed up with living in California alone, while his children were spread across the country. While Kate was closer to Nevada than John, Daniel was in New York.
Kayla, his wife of many years, died in a tragic accident. He hoped that his kids would come to visit him during the holidays, so that he could enjoy the whole family.

“You know I’m getting old, Kate,”Grant tried to use guilt as a way to persuade his daughter.
She didn’t give in to it. “Please, Dad. You’re in perfect shape. We’ll see you in the summer when we go to Disneyland together. How does that sound?”She laughed at her father’s obvious manipulation, she responded.
“Ok, honey. That’s fine,” Grant replied, smiling sheepishly.
After a few minutes, they put down their video chat and he breathed in a deep, long sigh. He was now feeling lonely again. They called every week, which was fun and he did get to see his grandchildren but it was not enough.
He knew it was time to do something and had an idea. It was a bit drastic, and they might get mad at him, but it might work.

A few months after the Christmas holidays, he sent three identical letters to his children, and the contents couldn’t have been more shocking.
Kate opened the letter as soon as she got back from the supermarket. She cried throughout the night, thinking about how her dad missed holidays and how she would never have those memories again.
John’s wife opened the phone and called him at work. He ran home and cried in her arms. They made plans. Meanwhile, Daniel grabbed his on his way out for a jog and stopped in the middle of the street to bawl his eyes out.
They made plans and called each other instantly. Their father had passed away and, according to reports, he had hired an attorney to help with his funeral and all other aspects of his burial. They would need to show up at his house for the funeral and service. The lawyer would then read his will.

John, Kate and Daniel made arrangements for their families and flew to California to attend their father’s funeral. They returned home together.
“Where’s everybody?”Daniel pondered, and he threw on his suit jacket as he walked the yard towards his father’s house.
“What do you mean ‘everybody?'”John asked the question, pushing his stroller up the hill as he was bringing their newborn baby along.
“His friends. His neighbors. I don’t know,”Daniel answered, looking solemnly at his father’s house.
“I don’t know. Are we early?”John asked and looked around to check if his wife was following.
Kate approached and kissed both of them on the cheek. “What’s going on?”She was curious.
“There’s no one else here. Are we early?”Daniel spoke to his sister.

“I think so. They’ll come soon. Let’s go in and get settled before we leave for the cemetery,”Kate suggested that they all go to the front door.
They stopped dead in their tracks as they entered the house. The living room was dominated by a large rectangular table. Place settings, flowers, and the like were all available. Grant suddenly stepped out with a tray containing the largest turkey you could imagine.
“DAD!”John, Kate, and Daniel shouted simultaneously.
“Hello! Come in! Come in!”Grant smiled big and set the tray in the middle.
“Dad, for God’s sakes! What’s happening?”John bellowed, his anger colored his tone, and Kate began to cry beside her brother.

“This was the only way I could think of to get you guys here together! Please forgive me for scaring you. But now that we’re all here, let’s enjoy that we’re all alive and healthy,”Grant said this, looking at his children and grinning crookedly.
Daniel laughed, even as a single tear fell from his eye. He then wiped it off. His siblings were still troubled by this revelation, but he always had a better sense than him.
“Come on, guys. Dad is healthy and thriving. Let’s celebrate,”He said, pushing his siblings in.
The rest of their families behaved awkwardly initially, but the children ran to their grandfather and hugged them fiercely. Kate was able to stop crying and finally settled down. John was still upset, but he was mostly happy that their father was still alive.

They shared dinner together and rejoiced in the fact that their father wasn’t dead. But John had some profound words for Grant that night, warning him never to do something like that again.
“If you guys don’t visit me more often, I might do it again,” Grant joked, then he laughed. Needless to mention, Grant’s children visited every holiday from that point on.
What can we learn from this tale?
- More often, visit your parents. You can be so busy in life. But you must make sure to take the time to visit your parents before it’s too late.
- You can forgive easily, because life is too precious. Grant’s kids could have been angrier, but they forgave their father quickly because he was alive and well. That was all that mattered.
