Boy Helps Old Man with Shaking Hands Pick up Groceries from Floor, Man Gives Him Tiny Parcel — Story of the Day

An older man keeps dropping his groceries on the floor due to his trembling hands, but no one steps in to help him except a 12-year-old boy. The man was moved by the kindness of the boy and gave him a small parcel that was very dear to his heart.

Jason Kent, 12 years old, was searching Molly’s Supermarket’s chocolate aisle in Ohio for a large Ferrero Rocher box when he stopped. He stopped, paused in front of the aisle, and his eyes were fixed on the older man in the grocery store’s vegetable section.

Stella, Jason’s mom, was busy shopping for their month’s supplies. Stella allowed Jason to buy his favorite chocolates since he was a good boy to her. Jason was so focused on his older brother that he completely forgot about his chocolates.

Jason noticed that the man, an older man, was sitting hunched on a cane. Everything he picked up ended up on the floor. The man would bend further to try to pick up the item, but it would fall again.

Jason noticed the man’s weak, trembling hands and realized that he needed assistance. The boy ran quickly to the man and started picking up his vegetables.

“Here, sir,” As he began to scoop up the potatoes on the ground around him, he spoke. “You can tell me what vegetables you want, and I’ll pick them up for you.”

The man nodded and his eyes widened. “Thank you very much, young man. So many people passed by me, but nobody bothered to help. What’s your name?”

“I’m Jason,” He smiled and replied. “You don’t need to thank me. My dad always used to tell me that we must protect and serve those in need! You see, he was a brave police officer!”

“Was?”He was curious.

“My dad died while serving our country, so it’s just mom and me now. I sometimes wish he wasn’t a cop because I miss him, but mom told me that everyone considers dad a hero! I want to be like him when I grow up because he helped the good people and punished the rotten heads!” He exclaimed enthusiastically, and then laughed. “Should we grab your vegetables now?”

“Oh, I see, I see,” The older man nodded his head and thanked Jason for helping him get the vegetables. As they were talking, the older man introduced himself and told Jason his story to keep Jason amused.

“If you’re reading this, our wish has been granted. I hope it can help you in the future.”

“My name is Alfred,” He said. “I once had a little boy just like you. My wife and I loved him so much….” Stella saw Jason and asked him to hurry, but Alfred couldn’t finish.

“Jason, darling!” She shouted to herself from afar. “Let’s go! We’re late!”

Jason was not done helping Alfred. “Just a minute, Alfred, I’ll be right back.”

“Mom,”He said it as he ran over to Stella. “If you want to leave, you can go. I need to help Alfred. His hands keep trembling, and he can’t hold anything. Dad would be disappointed if I didn’t help him….”

Stella noticed Jason bending down and smiling at Stella, his teeth decayed visible. She felt sorry for Jason, and told Jason that they would help him quickly before heading home. Both approached Alfred and helped him get his groceries.

Stella suggested that Alfred be dropped at his house after they had completed the billing. However, the older man insisted that he would take care of it.

“I really appreciate your help. Jason is very kind, and I can’t thank you both enough. I – I am sorry for bothering you… I have Parkinson’s disease, which is why I can barely hold anything.

“It has troubled me for several years, and I’ve been in plenty of situations where I needed help, but nobody helped me. Today, what Jason did really touched my heart…” Stella noticed the older man’s eyes were welling up.

Alfred, would you mind if I asked?” she asked, worried. “You can share what you like. We can hear what you have to say. Would you like to talk and sit down? There’s a park nearby….” she suggested.

Alfred nodded, and they went to the park. Stella knew she was late for dinner preparations, but something about the man told him she needed to hear his story.

“Several years ago,” Alfred began as they sat on a bench. “I lost my son in a tragic car crash. He was our sole child. He was the only child. His death devastated my wife. Since then I have lived alone and don’t know anyone I can call my family.

“Today, when Jason helped me, he reminded me of my son. He was just like Jason when he was a kid, and so, I have something I’d like to give Jason.”

Alfred took out one small package and gave it to Jason. “Consider this a small reward for your kindness, Jason. This is very close to my heart, and I always wanted to give it to someone who would appreciate it….”

Stella said that they didn’t need anything to help him, as they were helping him out of concern. However, the older man insisted. They had to concede.

Stella and Jason returned home to find the parcel unwrapped and inside was a key as well as a note.

“Why would Alfred give me a key?” Stella took the note and began to read it while Jason was busy with the key in his hands. Her tears never stopped when she was done.

“This key belongs to my safety deposit box,” It all began. “I had saved a modest sum for my son’s education, but I never got to put it to use. My wife and I had decided to give the money to someone who deserved it, and if you’re reading this, our wish has been granted. I hope it can help you in the future. Alfred and Linda.”

“Oh, Alfred, you didn’t have to. This was unnecessary…” Stella shed a tearful sigh.

A few years later, Jason, a mature adult, entered the police force to find Alfred and say thank you. Jason found out that Alfred had died after months of searching.

Jason felt awful when he received the news. He wished that he had done more to locate Alfred sooner. He couldn’t do much right now. He carried a bouquet of flowers to Alfred’s grave and said a brief thank you in his prayer.

“Thank you for helping me, Alfred,” He spoke. “When mom and I needed money for my education, the funds you gave me came in handy. Thank you for that, and rest in peace….”
