LAYLA’S DRASTIC HEALTH TRANSFORMATION

Layla was one-year-old when Charlotte began to notice that Layla’s hair wasn’t flat. “I think I was in denial and kept saying it was going to go flat,” Charlotte.

Layla’s platinum blonde hair kept growing. Layla’s uncontrollable growth spurred Kevin and Charlotte to look into the matter. Layla was one-year-old when doctors diagnosed her with the rare Uncombable Hair Syndrome.

UHS was established for the first time in 1973. It is characterised by frizzy, dry hair that sticks up at the ends and is difficult to flatten.

This condition affects three genes: PADI3, TGM3 and TCHH. These genes control the hair’s structure.

THE RARITY OF UNCOMBABLE HAAIR SYNDROME

Uncombable hair syndrome (UHS), also known as spunglass hair, is a rare condition. This rare condition affects approximately 100 people worldwide.

Although the syndrome is more common in the first three years of a child’s life, it can also develop later on. Children with the condition tend to have their hair become more manageable as they grow up, and most often by adolescence.

Charlotte was hesitant to seek a diagnosis because of the rarity and difficulty in finding this condition. She said, “part of the reason I delayed getting her tested for it is because [there are] only one hundred people with it in the world – the chances of having it are so slim.”

Layla’s parents are a great example of how to teach children confidence despite being different from other children. How would you react if your child had the same condition?
